Marcus Outzen, the former Florida State quarterback who started in the first BCS national championship game, passed away at 46, as confirmed by his son on social media. He died in Tampa, Florida, after being recently diagnosed with Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare immune disorder, according to reports from the Tallahassee Democrat.
Known as “The Rooser” for his red hair, Outzen played for Florida State from 1997 to 2000, mainly serving as a backup. He became the starter in 1998 after Chris Weinke’s injury late in the season. Outzen played a pivotal role in leading the Seminoles to victories in his first two starts, which earned them a spot in the Fiesta Bowl. However, Tennessee claimed a 23-16 victory in the inaugural BCS championship.
During his time at Florida State, Outzen completed 72 out of 121 passes for 1,074 yards, with five touchdowns and six interceptions. He also rushed for 142 yards and three scores. He was part of the Seminoles’ national championship team in 1999.
Bobby Rhodes, his former teammate at Florida State, expressed sadness over Outzen’s passing, describing him as a good friend both on and off the field.
