The New York Yankees have eagerly awaited the return of veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu, who has been recovering from a significant bruise on his right foot. Although LeMahieu began a rehab assignment a few weeks ago, it was cut short after one at-bat, necessitating additional rest and recovery time.
LeMahieu’s Return to the Yankees
Fortunately, LeMahieu rejoined the Yankees’ lineup on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels. Despite the team’s 4-3 loss, he made a notable impact with his consistent contact-hitting skills. Although he didn’t record a hit, LeMahieu made solid contact in each at-bat, flying out to right, left, and center field. He also drew a walk in the fourth inning and scored on a Juan Soto single, following Soto’s 424-foot home run in the first inning.
LeMahieu took over for Jon Berti, who is expected to miss six to eight weeks with a calf strain, and seamlessly assumed the role at third base. Last season, DJ posted a .243/.327/.390 batting line with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs, achieving a 101 wRC+. His performance notably improved after the mid-season coaching change from Dillon Lawson to Sean Casey, hitting .273/.377/.432 in the second half.
With James Rowson now serving as the primary hitting coach, the Yankees have emphasized intelligent play, focusing on both contact hitting and power. This strategy has paid off, with the team ranking in the top ten in both batting average and home runs.
Having LeMahieu back in the lineup and batting ninth gives the Yankees a strategic advantage. If he can regain his top form, it will significantly strengthen the team’s offensive capabilities as they continue their campaign.
