BREAKING NEWS: Top-Star Alabama Commit Left Rival Auburn

The Alabama Crimson Tide recently secured four-star quarterback Keelon Russell for their 2025 recruiting class. Originally committed to SMU, Russell decided to switch his pledge to join Alabama’s strong roster in Tuscaloosa.

This move delighted head coach Kalen DeBoer, as Russell is currently rated as the nation’s top passer by ESPN. Alabama faced competition from other programs for his commitment.

Russell, a native of the Lone Star State, initially committed to SMU in September 2023. However, in April the following year, Alabama extended an offer, leading to an official visit shortly after. Russell then decommitted from SMU and officially joined the Crimson Tide in early June.

DeBoer has admired Russell’s talent since taking over for Nick Saban earlier this year. Russell noted that he was DeBoer’s top target upon assuming his new role in Tuscaloosa.

“Kalen DeBoer and his staff believed in me from the start,” Russell shared in an interview with On3 Sports. “I was the only QB they’ve recruited since January… I was on the phone with Kalen DeBoer, and he said, ‘You’re going to be the leader of our team. You’re going to be the star. You’re going to be the legs, the eyes, the heart of our team.’”

Russell chose Alabama because he felt prioritized, unlike with other schools.

Auburn’s head coach Hugh Freeze and the Tigers were also heavily interested, hoping to lure Russell away from their rival. However, Russell ignored their efforts and remained committed to Alabama.

One possible reason for his decision could be Auburn’s simultaneous pursuit of five-star QB JuJu Lewis, who is currently committed to USC. Alternatively, Russell may have felt a stronger connection with the Alabama coaching staff.

Regardless, Auburn’s attempts were unsuccessful, giving Alabama the edge in this recruitment battle.
