The Denver Broncos extended cornerback Pat Surtain II’s contract on Wednesday, making him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. The reported deal is for four years and $96 million, with $77.5 million guaranteed. With two years left on his rookie contract, Surtain is now under contract with the Broncos through 2029.
Surtain’s new average annual salary of $24 million surpasses the $21 million the Green Bay Packers are paying cornerback Jaire Alexander and the $21.025 million per year that Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. received earlier this year.
The Broncos confirmed the deal on social media but did not disclose the financial details.

Selected ninth overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Pat Surtain II quickly became a key player for the Broncos, appearing in all 16 games as a rookie and recording four interceptions. He built on that strong start with two standout seasons, earning two Pro Bowl selections and a First-Team All-Pro honor in 2022.
Widely regarded as one of the NFL’s premier cornerbacks, Surtain has impressive stats to back up his reputation. In his three seasons, the Alabama alum has amassed 187 tackles, seven interceptions, 36 passes defended, and one defensive touchdown.
