Former Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins exercised his contract option early this offseason, prompting speculation that the Brewers might explore trade possibilities for him. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Brewers are “open to moving” Hoskins, who is set to earn at least $22 million over the next two seasons. His deal includes an $18 million salary for 2025 and a $4 million buyout on a 2026 mutual option worth $18 million. Hoskins originally signed a two-year, $34 million contract with Milwaukee last offseason.
Rosenthal noted that finding a trade partner willing to take on Hoskins’ salary could be challenging, especially with several first basemen available on the market, including Pete Alonso, Christian Walker, and Paul Goldschmidt.
Teams interested in Hoskins would likely be gambling on a rebound season after his disappointing 2024 campaign, where he hit a career-low .214 with a .303 on-base percentage and a .419 slugging percentage over 517 plate appearances. At this stage of his career, Hoskins may be better suited for a DH role, as evidenced by his 92 starts at first base and 37 as a designated hitter in 2024.
As for the Phillies, they appear committed to keeping Bryce Harper at first base and Kyle Schwarber as the primary DH, making a reunion unlikely. While Hoskins is expected to remain with the Brewers in 2025, his track record of offensive production makes him an intriguing short-term gamble for potential suitors.
