The Phillies have signed former NPB pitcher Koyo Aoyagi to a minor league contract, including a non-roster invitation to MLB spring training, as announced by the team. Aoyagi, previously with the Hanshin Tigers, was posted on December 4 and had until today to sign with an MLB team. Had he not signed, he would have returned to the Tigers. However, Aoyagi chose the opportunity with Philadelphia over remaining in NPB.
His salary, if he makes the major league roster, has not been disclosed. The Phillies would pay the Hanshin Tigers a 20% posting fee based on Aoyagi’s MLB earnings, including bonuses.
The 31-year-old right-hander, known for his sidearm delivery, provides additional depth to Philadelphia’s pitching staff. While he primarily worked as a starter in Japan, his arm slot is often associated with bullpen roles. Aoyagi split his 2023 season between the Tigers and their minor league team, posting a 3.69 ERA over 61 innings in 12 NPB starts. His strikeout rate of 13% falls well below MLB averages, and his 7.8% walk rate indicates average command.
Across nine NPB seasons, Aoyagi has compiled a 3.08 ERA with a 17.1% strikeout rate. However, his last two seasons have been less consistent, including a 4.57 ERA over 100 1/3 innings in 2023.
Aoyagi also represented Japan in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, contributing to the team’s gold medal run despite struggling in limited appearances. He was not part of Japan’s roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
