Another Arizona State defensive back commits to new team in transfer portal

Arizona State faced a significant loss in its secondary during the winter college football transfer portal window, as several former Sun Devils defensive backs moved on to new programs.

Among head coach Kenny Dillingham’s prized transfer additions ahead of the 2024 season was redshirt sophomore Kamari Wilson from Florida. However, after spending just one season at Arizona State, Wilson re-entered the transfer portal in December.

The redshirt sophomore became the third defensive back to switch programs since the transfer portal opened on Dec. 9, joining sophomore Cole Martin and redshirt freshman Keontez Bradley.

Martin made his second career transfer on Dec. 22, choosing UCLA after his father, Demetrice, was named the Bruins’ pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. Meanwhile, Bradley committed to Buffalo on Dec. 23, the same day former Washington State redshirt freshman safety Adrian “Boogie” Wilson pledged to Arizona State.

Kamari Wilson appeared in seven games for the Sun Devils this season, recording 11 tackles. Before his stint at Arizona State, he spent two seasons with the Florida Gators, where he tallied 39 tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass deflection in 2022. However, his playing time diminished in 2023, with his lone tackle coming in a lopsided win against FCS opponent McNeese State.

Kamari Wilson, a former four-star prospect and top-100 recruit in the 2022 class, originally signed with Florida after a standout career at national powerhouse IMG Academy (Florida). Ranked as the ninth-best safety in the country, Wilson brought significant promise to the field.

He now joins a Memphis program that finished the season with an impressive 11-2 record, placing third in the American Athletic Conference. The Tigers capped off their season with a thrilling 42-37 victory over Big 12 opponent West Virginia in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl.
