Arizona State retains $3 million QB following gut punch College Football Playoff quarterfinal exit

Despite Arizona State’s national title dreams being dashed early in the year after a double-overtime loss to Texas in the Peach Bowl, the team got some positive news on Tuesday. Quarterback Sam Leavitt revealed his decision to stay with coach Kenny Dillingham and the Sun Devils.

“I want to leave a legacy here and turn Arizona State into something it’s never been before,” Leavitt said.

According to Nakos, quarterback Sam Leavitt had no doubts about staying at Arizona State, citing his $3 million NIL valuation and determination to improve his game.

Leavitt played a key role in leading the Sun Devils to an unexpected Big 12 title game appearance, a feat that seemed improbable in October. After a shocking loss to Cincinnati on October 19, Arizona State regrouped and capitalized on stumbles by Kansas State and Colorado. They closed the regular season with a five-game winning streak, securing a spot in the title game against Iowa State, which they won decisively, 45-19.

While Arizona State fell short of its ultimate goal, the season’s conclusion serves as a foundation for future growth. Leavitt’s decision to return ensures stability on offense, especially after running back Cam Skattebo shouldered much of the load this year.

Head coach Kenny Dillingham expressed optimism after the season, despite the disappointment. “When you look back at where these guys started, it’s an incredible testament to the team,” Dillingham said. “But man, that one stings.”

With the offseason ahead, Arizona State has time to reflect and prepare. Their 2025 campaign begins against Northern Arizona, followed by a crucial non-conference road game against Mississippi State in September.

Though not traditionally a powerhouse, Arizona State has made a significant impact this season. Whether that success can be sustained in the future rests on the leadership of Dillingham and the team’s continued development.
