The MLB trade deadline is at the end of July, but it’s already time to consider moves for the playoff push.
The Philadelphia Phillies lead the league, but there is still room for improvement.
MLB Insider Links Phillies to Potential Astros Outfield Trade
Houston Astros center fielder Jake Meyers could be an interesting trade target for the Phillies, according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi.
“Given the Phillies’ inconsistent center field production,” Morosi said on MLB Central, “Jake Meyers is a natural trade fit for a team like the Phillies, aiming to shore up that spot for the trade deadline and beyond.”
Meyers was considered a trade candidate last offseason before the Astros decided to keep him. The 27-year-old, a 2017 13th-round pick, is slashing .263/.325/.429, having a career year with six home runs and 25 RBIs, while playing an above-average center field.
Acquiring Meyers wouldn’t be just a rental for the Phillies, as he’s under team control through 2027 and in his prime.
The Phillies’ weakest area is the outfield, and they’ve been rumored to seek upgrades as the trade deadline approaches. Meyers could be a cost-effective, under-the-radar option. While he isn’t Luis Robert Jr. or Kyle Tucker, he could help stabilize the outfield for the season’s second half.
Meyers might not be a significant upgrade over Johan Rojas, but he would give manager Rob Thomson more flexibility in the outfield. Injuries are always a concern, and with Brandon Marsh currently on the IL, having Meyers would provide a reliable option to maintain production.
If the Astros are willing to trade Meyers, the Phillies likely wouldn’t need to give up much—perhaps a few mid-level prospects—without impacting their strong farm system.
This move could be low-risk, high-reward for Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies in their pursuit of a World Series title.
