John Mozeliak is nearing the end of his tenure as the president of baseball operations for the St. Louis Cardinals. He plans to step down when his contract expires after the 2025 season but has not yet named a successor. With Chaim Bloom joining as an adviser, there is speculation that the former Boston Red Sox executive might take over Mozeliak’s role.
Bloom started in Major League Baseball in 2005 as an intern with the Tampa Bay Rays, eventually becoming the senior vice president of baseball operations. During his time with the Rays, he contributed to their reputation as an innovative and successful team despite budget constraints. After the 2019 season, Bloom became the chief baseball officer for the Red Sox, where the team had a 267-262 record over his four-year tenure before he was fired in September 2023.
Bloom was known with the Red Sox as a cautious leader who avoided making big moves at the trade deadline, a trait that might concern Cardinals fans who are used to their front office’s conservative approach to trades and signings.
Mozeliak has several internal candidates to consider for his successor. While Bloom is a popular choice, the current general manager Michael Girsch and director of scouting Randy Flores are also possibilities. However, Bloom is the only leading candidate with experience running other teams, making it important to examine his track record with trades, signings, and drafts during his time with the Red Sox.
