This led WGR 550 reporter Joe DiBiase to suggest that the Bills consider bringing in former rival quarterback Ryan Tannehill. DiBiase posted on X, saying, “If no starting job becomes available to him via injury, Ryan Tannehill would be a significant upgrade for the Bills at backup QB… This is a 3-win football team if Trubisky had to play.”
Trubisky also left Saturday’s game with a knee injury, though the severity is still unclear.
As of now, the Bills have not indicated any plans to part ways with Trubisky, who was Allen’s backup in the 2021 season before spending the last two years with the Steelers. However, if they do decide to look elsewhere, Tannehill could be a prime candidate. The former Miami Dolphins quarterback remains a free agent after his four-year, $118-million contract with the Tennessee Titans ended. Tannehill, now 36, has stated that he is waiting for the right opportunity before signing with a new team.
Tannehill mentioned on the “Scoop City” podcast that he’s in no rush to return, saying, “Right now, I think it’s going to depend on situation… I’m not just going to continue to add years to add years. I want to be in a situation that I feel really good about.”
Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay noted that Tannehill’s stock has risen due to the poor performances of backup quarterbacks across the league during preseason, making him a more attractive option for teams seeking stability at the position.

Meanwhile, the Bills have already had to make one emergency addition to their quarterback roster, signing former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci after Shane Buechele suffered a neck injury. DiNucci played the second half of Saturday’s game against the Steelers, completing 3-of-5 passes for 20 yards.
Sal Maiorana of the Democrat & Chronicle suggested that the Bills might need to bring in yet another quarterback, depending on the severity of Trubisky’s injury, noting, “If he’s going to miss time, the Bills will be scrambling to find a backup because Ben DiNucci can’t be the No. 2.”
