BREAKING : Dodgers Add outfielder and first baseman And lost four others in Rule 5 draft

On Wednesday, the Dodgers lost one player in the big league round of the Rule 5 Draft when the Angels selected left-handed pitcher Garrett McDaniels. The Dodgers lost four players and acquired outfielder and first baseman John Rhodes in the minor league section of the Rule 5 Draft.

Players lost in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft are simply gone; they are now a part of the team that drafted them, with no further roster requirements, unlike in the major level stage.

The Dodgers lost catcher/outfielder Jefferson Valladres to the Twins, along with pitchers Hyun-il Choi (to the Nationals), Michael Hobbs (to the Mets), and Orlando Ortiz-Mayr (to the Marlins).

Rhodes played for the Orioles’ Double-A Bowie for the last two whole seasons and a portion of 2022.

The right-hander alternated between Triple-A Oklahoma City and Double-A Tulsa this season, recording a 4.92 ERA overall with 102 strikeouts and 40 walks in 115⅓ innings pitched. He had a couple standout starts in Triple-A in May, including a career-high seven innings pitched with just one run allowed on May 22 and six hitless innings on May 4.

Born and reared in Corona, Hobbs was selected by the Dodgers in the 10th round of the 2021 NFL Draft from Saint Mary’s College, which also produced Tony Gonsolin and Corbin Burnes. In 42 bullpen appearances with Double-A Tulsa this season, he recorded a 2.97 ERA, pitching 57⅔ innings with 30 walks and 52 strikeouts.

In 2021, Ortiz-Mayr, a Puerto Rican non-drafted free agent, led all Dodgers minor leaguers in innings pitched this season (135⅔). With Double-A Tulsa, he recorded a 4.71 ERA, 60 walks, and 108 strikeouts. On July 5, he defeated Wichita by pitching seven scoreless innings.

After hitting.266/.368/.359 in 22 games this season between Low-A Rancho Cucamonga and the Arizona Complex League, Valladres, who was first signed by the Dodgers out of Venezuela in 2019, spent the last four months on the injured list.
