Alabama’s defense has always been strong under Nick Saban, especially the defensive back unit, which is Saban’s specialty. Each week, the Crimson Tide could be counted on to deliver a stellar defensive performance, giving them a chance to win every game. Many former Alabama defensive players are now in the NFL.
One such player, Roman Harper, who played from 2003-2005 before Saban arrived, is concerned about this season’s defense in Tuscaloosa.
Concerns About Alabama’s Defense This Season
Touchdown Alabama shared a quote from Roman Harper expressing his concerns: “I have a little bit of concern with the whole defense as a whole just because it’s all such a brand new system… I like some of the things that they will be doing. It’s going to look a lot different than what Alabama did for so many years under Nick Saban. A little bit off-man coverage.”

New head coach Kalen DeBoer has hired South Alabama’s head coach, Kane Wommack, as his defensive coordinator. While much attention has been on the Crimson Tide’s new offense under DeBoer, the defense is also undergoing significant changes.
In addition to losing Saban, a defensive mastermind, Alabama also lost their defensive coordinator, Kevin Steele, who had revitalized the defense last season.
This fall, all eyes will be on Tuscaloosa to see if the Crimson Tide can maintain their defensive prowess. It will be intriguing to see what kind of team emerges—whether it will be an explosive offense, a formidable defense, or a blend of both.
