Kirby Smart is ramping up his aggressiveness in recruiting as this cycle comes to a close. He’s not only focusing on traditional uncommitted recruits but also pursuing several players who are currently committed to other programs.
On Thursday, news broke about a new recruit that Smart and Georgia football are actively pursuing, who happens to be committed to one of Georgia’s major rivals.
4-star CB Donovan Starr
Donovan Starr, a four-star cornerback from Brentwood, TN, is ranked No. 129 nationally by 247Sports, making him the No. 16 cornerback in the country and the top player from Tennessee.
Starr has been committed to Auburn since June 6, but recent developments suggest he may not be as committed as Auburn hopes.
This fall, Starr has taken multiple official visits, including a trip to Illinois in September, a visit to Alabama last weekend, and he has another visit planned to Vanderbilt next weekend. Now, Georgia has expressed interest in him as well.
As reported by On3, Starr mentioned, “They (Georgia) are definitely at the top of my list.” This statement stands out, especially since Georgia extended an offer to him on the same day, October 31.
While the sincerity of his statement remains uncertain, it’s certainly a positive remark to make right after receiving an offer.
If Georgia intends to sway Starr from Auburn, getting him on campus for a visit will be crucial. Given Starr’s recent activity, it seems likely he would be open to visiting.
Expect Smart to aim for a visit during one of Georgia’s last three regular-season games. If that occurs, there’s a genuine possibility that Smart and Georgia could succeed in flipping Starr from rival Auburn.
