On Tuesday, the Detroit Lions finalized their roster cuts, reducing the team to 53 players. This followed several cuts made on Monday, notably wide receivers Donovan Peoples-Jones and Kaden Davis, along with tight end Shane Zylstra.
The release of Nate Sudfeld made Hendon Hooker the backup quarterback to Jared Goff for the upcoming season. The Lions also announced the following roster changes on Tuesday: offensive lineman Christian Mahogany was placed on reserve/NFI, defensive lineman Brodric Martin and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley were placed on reserve/injured with a designation to return, and defensive lineman David Bada was waived/injured. Additionally, the team released several players, including cornerback Essang Bassey, wide receiver Daurice Fountain, and linebacker Joel Iyiegbuniwe.
Among the notable cuts on Tuesday, tight ends James Mitchell and Sean McKeon were waived, leaving Detroit with only three tight ends on the roster: Sam LaPorta, Brock Wright, and Parker Hesse, with Hesse also taking reps at fullback. The Lions will kick off their regular season against the Los Angeles Rams on September 8 in Sunday Night Football.
