BATON ROUGE – Charles Baglio, a longtime member of LSU’s football staff and a legendary figure in Louisiana athletics, passed away on Friday night.
Fondly known as “Coach Bags,” Baglio served as LSU’s director of external relations for 20 years, working under head coaches Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Ed Orgeron. During his tenure, he contributed to three national championships and four SEC titles.
Baglio joined LSU in July 2002 after a distinguished 34-year coaching career at Independence High School, where he spent 22 years as head coach. He led his team to nine district titles and two state championship appearances. With 205 career victories, he remains one of Louisiana’s most successful high school football coaches, ranking among the top 50 winningest coaches in the state’s history.
Inducted into the Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2001, Baglio was also honored as part of the 2024 National High School Athletics Coaches Association Hall of Fame class.
A native of Independence, Louisiana, Baglio earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southeastern Louisiana University, graduating in 1967 and 1973, respectively.
