The San Francisco 49ers were scheduled to have joint practices with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, but Kyle Shanahan canceled them due to several roster injuries.
As the second week of the preseason unfolds, Brandon Aiyuk remains with the 49ers. Although there’s still interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers, Aiyuk’s presence on the roster indicates the 49ers are not making hasty decisions.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo shed light on Aiyuk’s situation, acknowledging that it’s been tense and challenging. However, he offered a bit of optimism, noting that Aiyuk would prefer to stay with the 49ers, as he’s always wanted to, assuming the terms are fair.
Aiyuk recently took to Instagram to address the ongoing media speculation, saying, “Niners be in the media every day lol. It’s two options out there. Pick one and stop dropping reports. Simple.” However, Garafolo explained that the situation is more complex. He reported that both sides have exchanged proposals over the past week, with the 49ers improving their offer. While most of the key points have been agreed upon, one final issue remains unresolved. If this gets sorted out, Aiyuk is expected to sign with the 49ers, withdraw his trade request, and the team can move forward.
Garafolo emphasized that the next move is up to the 49ers, comparing the situation to Nick Bosa’s contract negotiations from the previous year, which were eventually resolved. In the end, the timing of the deal is less important than the outcome, and there’s hope that an agreement will be reached soon.
