The Arizona Diamondbacks officially confirmed on Friday their agreement on a one-year deal with left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery, including a one-year player option. Montgomery’s contract entails a $25 million payout for the current season, with the potential to earn between $20 million and $25 million in 2025, contingent on the number of starts he makes.
Should Montgomery make at least 10 starts this season, he retains the option to opt out of his contract and enter free agency. Initially, the Diamondbacks assigned Montgomery to Triple-A Reno to regain his form, as he missed spring training while his agent, Scott Boras, negotiated amid a sluggish free-agent market.
Montgomery is anticipated to join the major league roster by mid-April. At 31 years old, he notably performed well during last year’s postseason, contributing to the Texas Rangers’ World Series victory with a record of 3-1 and a 2.90 ERA across six games, including five starts. However, he faced a setback against the Diamondbacks in Game 2 of the World Series, surrendering four runs and nine hits over six innings, although the Rangers ultimately triumphed in five games.
During the previous season, Montgomery split his time between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Rangers, tallying a 10-11 record with a 3.20 ERA over 32 starts. Across seven seasons with the New York Yankees, Cardinals, and Rangers, he has accumulated a record of 38-34 with a 3.68 ERA across 141 appearances, primarily as a starter.
