The restructuring of the coaching staff in New England’s offensive department appears to be ongoing. Bill O’Brien, who is transitioning to Boston College, is reportedly looking to bring Patriots tight ends coach Will Lawing with him as his offensive coordinator. This move would be logical since Lawing has previously worked under O’Brien in various roles, spanning from Houston to New England, and even at Penn State and the University of Alabama.
If Lawing does join O’Brien at Boston College, it would mark his departure from New England after just one season. While the Patriots have retained several coaches on the defensive side, such as DeMarcus Covington, Mike Pellegrino, Brian Belichick, and Jerod Mayo, the offensive coaching staff has seen significant changes.
Under Mayo’s leadership, the offensive coaching staff has been extensively revamped. New additions include offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo, offensive line coach Scott Peters, quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney, assistant offensive line coach Robert Kugler, and assistant wide receivers coach Tiquan Underwood. The status of wide receivers coach Troy Brown remains uncertain, and the team also needs to fill the vacancy at running backs coach following Vinnie Sunseri’s departure for the University of Washington.
This overhaul on the offensive side is understandable given New England’s struggles in the previous season. The team’s scoring offense ranked among the worst of the past decade, averaging just 13.9 points per game, prompting the need for significant changes and improvements.
