The St. Louis Cardinals have bolstered their starting rotation with the additions of Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson, yet there remains room for improvement. While the team may not be inclined to sign another big contract, the longer free agents remain available, the more likely their asking prices could decrease.
Among the notable free agent pitchers still on the market are Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery. Despite initial hopes for lucrative deals, both players, represented by agent Scott Boras, have seen some of Boras’s other clients accept smaller contracts, such as Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman with the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants, respectively.
Should Snell or Montgomery adjust their expectations, St. Louis could emerge as an attractive destination. Montgomery, in particular, stands out as a potential fit due to his previous stint with the Cardinals and presumably lower cost compared to Snell.
Even without further acquisitions, many predict the Cardinals to excel in the National League Central. However, adding someone like Montgomery or Snell would solidify their position and potentially elevate them to true contenders.
With ample financial resources still available to them, St. Louis could feasibly accommodate the contracts of Montgomery or Snell within their budgetary constraints. Securing either pitcher could elevate the Cardinals from a playoff team to a legitimate contender.
