Mikel Merino’s Ascendancy

Since joining Real Sociedad from Newcastle United in July 2018, Mikel Merino has significantly progressed. Initially struggling to make an impact at both the national and club levels, his return to Spain marked a turning point. Since then, he has made nearly 250 appearances for Real Sociedad, contributing 27 goals and 30 assists. Merino also played a crucial role in Spain’s recent UEFA Euro 2024 victory.

With only 12 months remaining on his contract with Real Sociedad, Merino’s future is uncertain. This has attracted the attention of several top European clubs, including Chelsea, who are eager to secure his services this summer.

A Potential Move to London

Chelsea’s interest in Mikel Merino is somewhat unexpected, given their focus on strengthening other areas of the team, such as defence and attack. Their midfield already saw the addition of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, making further reinforcements unnecessary unless there are departures.

Despite this, Merino has become a target for Chelsea, with a move to the Premier League looking likely. It remains to be seen whether he will join Chelsea or another interested club like Arsenal. Nonetheless, the UEFA Euro 2024 winner’s arrival in England seems imminent.
