In 2024, the New York Giants made significant financial adjustments by allowing running back Saquon Barkley and safety Xavier McKinney to depart via NFL free agency.
While this strategic move may have been deemed necessary for the Giants, it doesn’t preclude the possibility of these players finding success elsewhere. Notably, McKinney’s signing with the Green Bay Packers has generated considerable buzz within the NFL community.
In an ESPN experts article published on March 23, staff writer Matt Bowen labeled McKinney’s addition as the “best overall” signing of free agency thus far. Bowen highlighted McKinney’s versatility as a safety, emphasizing his adept ball-tracking skills and coverage abilities, which align well with the aggressive defensive schemes under new coordinator Jeff Hafley. McKinney, aged 25, boasts nine interceptions and 14 pass breakups over his four professional seasons. His contract with the Packers spans four years, totaling $68 million.
Following his agreement with the Packers, McKinney shared his sentiments on social media on March 15, seemingly implying some dissatisfaction with the Giants organization and fanbase. While expressing gratitude towards Packers fans for their warmth, McKinney’s post hinted at feeling underappreciated by the Giants. Despite a response from a supportive Giants fan, expressing appreciation for McKinney, it’s evident that contract negotiations may have strained the relationship between player and team.
Despite the loss of key players like McKinney, ESPN NYG insider Jordan Raanan noted that the Giants have made strides in addressing their roster needs during free agency. While prioritizing improvements to the offensive line and pass rush, the Giants have bolstered their roster with acquisitions like Brian Burns. However, Raanan highlighted the absence of a true No. 1 wide receiver as the biggest remaining gap in the Giants’ roster. With potential solutions in the NFL draft, such as Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, or Rome Odunze, the Giants aim to fortify their receiving corps for the upcoming season, potentially complementing existing talents like Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, and Jalin Hyatt.
