Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Terron Armstead has been protecting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for the last two seasons after previously playing with Drew Brees at the New Orleans Saints from 2013 to 2020.
In a recent appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Armstead compared Tagovailoa to the future Hall of Famer.
“The accuracy and precision are strikingly similar,” Armstead said of the two quarterbacks, as reported by Alain Poupart of Fan Nation’s All Dolphins. “Drew is a Hall of Famer, one of the best quarterbacks ever. Tua’s accuracy and his ability to manipulate and move defenders with his eyes and footwork are remarkable. It’s reminiscent of Drew Brees, and though that’s a high bar, Tua measures up. He’s an impressive passer.”
According to ESPN stats, Tagovailoa finished Week 18 ranked fifth among qualified quarterbacks with a career-high 69.3% completion rate. Armstead also noted the 26-year-old’s growth as a leader over the past two years.
“I observed his leadership growth and how he holds his teammates accountable,” Armstead said of Tagovailoa. “I saw him confront star receiver Tyreek Hill last year, something he wouldn’t have done in his first year. I’m eager to see him take another step in managing and leading the team. I’m excited for him and will do everything I can to keep him protected.”
Tagovailoa’s protection played a crucial role in Miami’s success during the 2023 season, as he started all 17 regular-season games for the first time in his career. He finished Week 18 leading the NFL with 4,624 passing yards and ranked 10th among qualified quarterbacks with a 60.8 adjusted QBR. Tagovailoa was also fifth in passer rating at 101.1 and threw 29 touchdown passes with 14 interceptions in those 17 games.
If Tagovailoa can stay healthy and continue improving, the 2024 Dolphins have a bright future ahead.
