Florida State fans were growing impatient with the lack of acquisitions from the transfer portal during the spring window, especially considering head football coach Mike Norvell’s reputation for securing highly-touted transfers.
The program had already landed fifteen transfers via the portal. Then, on Tuesday morning, there was a surge of excitement as 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that defensive back Omarion Cooper might be returning to Tallahassee for the second time.
Adding to the excitement, former Auburn linebacker transfer Cam Riley received three crystal ball predictions in favor of the Seminoles by 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Zach Blostein, and Brendan Sonnone.
Riley initially committed to North Carolina State but later announced his de-commitment on social media. He boasts 120 total tackles (eight for loss) and 2.5 sacks from his time with the Tigers.
Although the Seminoles had pursued Riley earlier in the spring, the coaching staff’s efforts seemed somewhat restrained. However, they were impressed by linebackers like Omar Graham Jr., Shawn Murphy, Justin Cryer, Blake Nichelson, and DeMarco Ward.
While securing senior DJ Lundy’s return to Tallahassee after he entered the transfer portal and committed to head football coach Deion Sanders at Colorado was significant, the overall linebacker rotation lacks extensive collegiate experience.
Nevertheless, linebackers coach Randy Shannon’s ability to develop players at a high level inspires confidence. Pursuing Riley is a wise move for the Seminoles as he brings veteran experience and could help mentor the younger options on the roster.
