On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Nick Ramirez, a former left-handed pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, in a trade. Ramirez had recently been designated for assignment by the New York Yankees, who received cash considerations from the Dodgers as part of the deal. Following the trade, Ramirez was sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City by the Dodgers.
During the 2019 season, Ramirez, 34 years old at the time, played a significant role in the Tigers’ bullpen, leading them in innings pitched with 79 2/3. He recorded 74 strikeouts and 35 walks, maintaining a 4.07 ERA.
Ramirez continued his association with the Tigers in the subsequent season, dividing his time between Detroit and Triple-A Toledo. His career path then led him to the San Diego Padres in 2021, followed by a stint with the Seattle Mariners in 2022.
Prior to joining the Yankees last season, Ramirez signed a minor-league contract and eventually made it to the major leagues in April. During his time with the Yankees, he showcased a strong performance, boasting a 2.66 ERA over 40 2/3 innings, with 28 strikeouts and nine walks.
However, Ramirez did not secure a spot on the Opening Day roster this year during spring training with the Yankees, leading to his designation for assignment when the team opted for left-handed pitcher Tanner Tully instead.
Originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth round of the 2011 draft from Cal State Fullerton, Ramirez initially spent seven seasons as a first baseman before transitioning to pitching. He demonstrated promising skills as a pitcher in the Brewers organization in 2017 and 2018 before joining the Tigers as a minor-league free agent.
