Special teams matters, with Atlanta’s newest head coach not wanting to change its coordinator.
Although the Atlanta Falcons recently parted ways with their head coach, there has been significant interest in their assistant coaches. Shortly after the dismissal of Arthur Smith, the Falcons initially declined interview requests for their defensive coordinator, Ryan Nielsen. However, after Rich McKay and assistant Arthur Blank conducted further interviews, they eventually approved Nielsen’s interviews, and he quickly joined the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Another assistant coach, Marquice Williams, the special teams coordinator, garnered attention. While he was initially denied an interview with the New York Giants, he was later given approval and interviewed with the New England Patriots. Despite reportedly receiving a job offer from the Patriots, Williams declined the opportunity.
The reason for Williams’ decision has now become apparent: Coach Morris wants Williams back on the Falcons’ staff.
The Falcons’ coaching staff, led by Coach Morris, is poised to become the second most crucial aspect for the team, trailing only the quarterback situation. It is highly unlikely that Morris will declare Desmond Ridder as the starting quarterback for the team. The pressing concern for coordinators is the urgent need for a coach who can optimize the performance of the team’s standout players. Regarding special teams, a significant question revolves around identifying the best strategist for maximizing the talents of return specialist Avery Williams. Despite being sidelined in the 2023 season due to injury, Williams showcased exceptional skills in both 2021 and 2022.
Marquice Williams has had notable achievements in previous seasons, such as multiple blocked punts and special teams touchdowns. His presence is expected to bring stability to the coaching staff, which should, in turn, positively impact the team roster. Anticipate minimal alterations among key contributors on special teams.
