The Brooklyn Nets took a calculated risk by choosing Jalen Wilson with the 51st pick in the recent draft, recognizing his established success in college basketball. Now, halfway through the 2023-24 season, they are pleased with the progress of the young player.
Wilson, who had an impressive tenure at Kansas and was named the unanimous 2023 Big-12 Player of the Year, has been promoted by Brooklyn from a two-way contract to a three-year standard deal. According to sources from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, this contract ensures his place in the team for the current season, provides partial guarantees for the following season, and includes a team option for the subsequent one.

Despite initially being overlooked in the draft due to concerns about his athleticism and three-point shooting, the 23-year-old has shown significant improvement in both areas during his rookie season. Transitioning from a 31.6 percent three-point shooter in college, Wilson has demonstrated a notable improvement, now shooting 43.3 percent from beyond the arc with Brooklyn and 37.4 percent in the G-League.

In addition to his scoring prowess, Wilson has showcased versatility in his game, contributing as a defender, rebounder, screener, and cutter, much like he did during his time at Kansas. His impact has been felt particularly with the Long Island Nets, where he leads in scoring with an average of 19.0 points per game on 47 percent shooting across 22 G-League appearances.
Interim head coach Kevin Ollie commended Wilson’s professionalism and work ethic, highlighting his dedication to continuous improvement and his positive influence on the team dynamics. Despite his youth, Wilson has displayed leadership qualities and a willingness to learn, which bodes well for his future development within the organization.
