Newcastle United is considering a move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer. The 27-year-old has been a long-standing target for Newcastle, who need to bolster their attacking options due to the uncertain future of Callum Wilson. Wilson, entering the last year of his contract, may seek new opportunities elsewhere as Alexander Isak has established himself as Newcastle’s primary striker during the 2023-24 season.
Calvert-Lewin, who has been on Newcastle’s radar since 2021, had a solid season despite past injury problems. He made 33 Premier League appearances for Everton last season, scoring seven goals, and is valued at around £37 million with one year remaining on his contract.
There is a potential advantage for Newcastle in the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Everton has shown interest in Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh, who was signed for approximately £7 million last summer and loaned to Feyenoord. Newcastle could demand around £30 million for Minteh, which could be amortised over the duration of any incoming player’s contract, aiding Newcastle’s PSR compliance while pursuing Calvert-Lewin.
Both Newcastle and Everton need to raise funds before June 30 to meet PSR requirements. A swap where Minteh moves to Everton and Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle in separate financial deals would benefit both clubs. Although the exact fees for Calvert-Lewin and Minteh are still being negotiated, both players are reportedly interested in the respective moves, which would allow both clubs to reinvest in new signings before the transfer window closes.
Newcastle aims to sell Minteh before June 30, while the acquisition of Calvert-Lewin could take place after this deadline, facilitated by Everton’s already agreed trade with Aston Villa involving Lewis Dobbin and Tim Iroegbunam.
