Despite ongoing contract negotiations, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is actively participating in offseason workouts. Last week, Coach Sean McVay emphasized that they are handling the matter privately.
On Tuesday, reporters sought further insights by asking offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur if he had noticed any changes in Stafford amidst the contract discussions.
“No,” LaFleur responded. “Matthew loves being on the field. You saw him today, having a great time. It reminds you that this is still a kid’s game, even though he earns a lot doing it. In meetings and on the field, he’s as positive as ever, just like when I first met him a year ago. What happens next with his contract is beyond my role. I trust the process and we’ll see what unfolds.”
The issue, highlighted right after the Rams didn’t draft a quarterback in the first round, is that Stafford seeks more guaranteed money beyond 2024. This would require the Rams to shift from their year-to-year strategy with him. McVay has shown a willingness to accommodate this.

The situation is further complicated by Jared Goff, whom the Rams traded to acquire Stafford, securing a new contract averaging $53 million annually. This might prompt Stafford to seek a raise from his current deal, which averages $40 million annually with commitments of $31 million this year, $32 million next year, and $31 million in 2026.
