Breaking news: Rangers top star finally confirm another contract

The Texas Rangers announced today that outfielder Dustin Harris has been sent down to AAA Round Rock. Additionally, non-roster invitees Matt Whatley, Liam Hicks, Abi Ortiz, and Aaron Zavala have been re-assigned to the minor league camp.

These moves were largely expected. Harris, though the first player from the 40-man roster to be demoted, was not anticipated to make the Opening Day roster, particularly given his recent absence from play due to an oblique issue.\

Among the NRIs, Whatley and Hicks, both catchers, likely joined camp to provide extra support for pitchers and were not seriously considered for the major league squad.

Zavala, a second-round pick in 2021, faced setbacks in 2023 due to injury but aims to rebound this year, possibly starting at AA Frisco.

Conversely, Ortiz had an impressive 2023 season, elevating his prospect status with notable offensive stats. As a first baseman, he is expected to begin the season at AA Frisco, but like Zavala, was not in contention for the Opening Day roster.

According to the Texas Rangers PR account, the major league camp now comprises 64 players, including 39 from the 40-man roster and 25 NRIs.
