PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson faced criticism from Nightcap host and NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe over a recent interview with ESSENCE magazine.
In the interview, Wilson discussed his experiences as a black quarterback in the NFL and being one of the few to win a Super Bowl. Sharpe expressed dissatisfaction with Wilson’s comments on his podcast, pointing out other black quarterbacks who had paved the way, such as Doug Williams, Shack Harris, Joe Gilliam, Marlin Briscoe, Jack Harry, Steve McNair, Donovan McNabb, and Michael Vick.
Wilson later responded, emphasizing that his words were taken out of context and that he values the contributions of those who came before him. He urged for unity and recognition of the evolution of black quarterbacks in the NFL and expressed gratitude for all those who came before, alongside, and will come after him.
Wilson was named ‘Sexiest Man of the Moment’ by ESSENCE, prompting the interview about his journey in football, life, and leadership.
This season, the Super Bowl winner will compete with Justin Fields for the Steelers’ starting quarterback role. The team’s objective is to return to the championship game, hoping Wilson will lead them there.
