The Pittsburgh Steelers held their mandatory minicamp last week, marking another step towards the upcoming season.
With each passing day, the start of training camp draws nearer. The intense summer heat will amplify the competition among players vying for positions on the Steelers’ roster. Battles for snaps, starting jobs, or simply making the team will intensify. This period is crucial for many players across the NFL to prove their worth.
Minicamp serves as a brief prelude, giving players a taste of the challenges ahead.
Players will now enjoy a short break before training camp begins on July 24th, which is when the real competition starts. Those who performed well in minicamp will aim to carry that momentum into training camp, while those who struggled might find it tough to secure a roster spot.
Possible Changes at Left Tackle
Dan Moore Jr., the long-time starting left tackle, might be on his way out. Despite holding the position, he has faced criticism, especially after preventing Broderick Jones from starting last season. With the addition of Troy Fautanu, Moore’s starting job is at risk. Although a cut is unlikely, Moore could be a strong candidate for a trade.
Linebacker Mark Robinson Needs to Step Up
Mark Robinson, transitioning from running back to linebacker in college, is entering his third NFL season. His inexperience can no longer be an excuse; he needs to prove his worth. With a competitive depth chart at middle linebacker, and Cole Holcomb possibly returning soon, Robinson must have an outstanding preseason to secure a spot on the roster.
Crowded Receiving Room
The receiver room for the Steelers is extremely crowded heading into training camp. While there are many potential starters, the overall quality remains questionable. Quez Watkins, despite his experience, might not make the final roster due to the rise of Calvin Austin III during minicamp.
Young Defensive Lineman Needs to Shine
With Cam Heyward’s future uncertain, younger defensive linemen need to step up. Keeanu Benton is expected to have a strong season, but DeMarvin Leal, coming off a disappointing sophomore year after a promising rookie season, needs to perform well in the preseason. If he doesn’t, his future with the Steelers could be in jeopardy.
Center Position Uncertainty
Nate Herbig, once the primary center option, faces uncertainty after the Steelers drafted Zach Frazier in the second round. Despite Herbig’s valuable depth role, his high cap number makes him a potential trade or surprise cut candidate post-minicamp, especially if Pittsburgh acquires an expensive asset before the season.
