The Pittsburgh Steelers have inked a two-year deal with Cordarrelle Patterson, a seasoned player known for his skills as both a running back and kickoff return specialist. According to an anonymous source familiar with the agreement speaking to The Associated Press, the contract is valued at $6 million overall.
At 33 years old, Patterson comes to the Steelers after three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, where he showcased his talent as a four-time All-Pro player. His arrival coincides with the NFL’s new kickoff rules, aimed at enhancing returns, providing the Steelers with a seasoned player to adapt to these changes.
Over his 11-year career spanning teams such as Minnesota, Oakland, New England, Chicago, and Atlanta, Patterson has demonstrated his prowess in kickoff returns with nine touchdowns. He has led the league in kickoff return average three times and boasts seven returns of 100 yards or more.
Patterson’s versatility has been a defining feature, having played as a wide receiver, kick returner, and even in the backfield during his stints with the Bears and the Falcons.
While with the Falcons, Patterson amassed over 600 rushing yards in both 2021 and 2022, although his role diminished last season with the emergence of rookie Bijan Robinson.
The Steelers have struggled to find a standout return player, evidenced by their longest kickoff return last season being only 37 yards, with an average return of 23.5 yards. Patterson’s signing reunites him with his former Falcons coach, Arthur Smith, who now serves as the offensive coordinator for the Steelers.
However, it’s unlikely that Patterson will see significant involvement in the running game, given the presence of strong running backs like Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren on the Steelers’ roster.
