BREAKING NEWS: Three landing spots for Top-star

The upcoming weeks could be crucial for the Toronto Blue Jays’ prospects.

Currently hovering around a .500 record and trailing 15 games behind the leader in the American League East, the Blue Jays are nonetheless only three games shy of securing the final wild-card spot, keeping their playoff hopes alive. The team’s performance in the coming weeks will be pivotal.

If the Blue Jays falter, they might become notable sellers in the market. While their expiring contracts would attract contenders, making some unexpected trades could yield greater returns.

Mark Feinsand from MLB.com has speculated that first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., with his $19.9 million salary, might be on the trading block. Although general manager Ross Atkins has expressed a desire to extend both Guerrero and shortstop Bo Bichette, their salary expectations will be a significant factor.

Where might Guerrero go if he is traded? Here are three potential landing spots:

Chicago Cubs
The Cubs are expected to be interested in any available first basemen and have been specifically linked to Guerrero. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Cubs officials have privately discussed the possibility of acquiring him. Guerrero would fill their first base vacancy and could be a key part of their 2025 roster, potentially moving Christopher Morel or Michael Busch to their best defensive positions, like designated hitter.

San Francisco Giants
The Giants have been seeking an impactful bat for years. While third baseman Matt Chapman has been a good addition, the team needs more firepower to stay competitive in the playoff race. The Giants have previously shown a willingness to spend on big names like Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa but have not finalized deals. An extension for Guerrero would fit their budget and provide the potent hitter they’ve been looking for.

Seattle Mariners

With a strong starting rotation and a reliable closer in Andres Munoz, the Mariners are close to having a World Series-caliber team. However, their offense has been lacking. Guerrero could be a game-changer, even if he’s not the power hitter they specifically need. His addition would allow injured first baseman Ty France to shift to another position, such as second or third base, addressing the lineup weaknesses caused by Jorge Polanco’s struggles before his injury.
