The New York Yankees will have to manage without DJ LeMahieu at the beginning of the season due to a bone bruise on his right foot, placing him on the injured list. This setback highlights a shortage in reserve infielders for the team, potentially prompting them to seek reinforcements through trades.
Manager Aaron Boone mentioned that Oswaldo Cabrera could step in as the backup shortstop and likely starting third baseman for Opening Day. Reports suggest the Yankees might explore trades before Thursday’s Opening Day to address this shortfall.
LeMahieu’s return for the home opener in April remains uncertain, as it depends on his recovery progress. Without him, Cabrera might also fill in at first base if Anthony Rizzo faces injury issues. Oswald Peraza could be the next option at shortstop and third base, but his availability is limited due to injury.
The team is reportedly considering options like Josh Harrison, a versatile player with experience at multiple positions, and a reunion with former Yankee Gio Urshela, who currently plays for the Detroit Tigers.
If external solutions aren’t viable, the Yankees may turn to minor league prospects like Jahmani Jones, Kevin Smith, and Jose Rojas for infield depth.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman stated they’re exploring all possibilities to address LeMahieu’s absence, including trades, free agents, or promoting from within.
