BREAKING NEWS: Ybarra sentenced to three years for child abuse

In Sidney, Bret Ybarra, aged 25, received a 36-month sentence from the Nebraska Department of Corrections for two counts of Child Abuse (Class IIIA felony). Both sentences will be served consecutively.

Charges of Child Abuse (Class II Felony) and Strangulation (Class IIA Felony) were filed against Ybarra on May 25, 2023. On April 16, 2024, Judge Derek Weimer sentenced him, with William Tangemann from the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office prosecuting the case.

According to a complaint filed on May 25, 2023, Ybarra is accused of causing serious bodily injury to a minor child between Nov. 7, 2022, and Feb. 23, 2023, by endangering their life or mental health, cruelly confining or punishing them, or depriving them of necessary care. Additionally, another accusation states that between Jan. 1, 2022, and March 29, 2022, Ybarra knowingly and intentionally endangered a child’s physical or mental health, cruelly punished them, or deprived them of necessities resulting in serious bodily injury.

The third accusation alleges that between March 1 and March 29, 2022, Ybarra knowingly and intentionally impeded the normal breathing or circulation of another person by applying pressure to their throat or neck, or by covering their mouth and nose.
