Describing the Patriots’ significant changes to their offensive coaching staff might seem straightforward, but amidst the overhaul, there’s one controversial figure set to make a return to New England in 2024. However, his specific role remains uncertain.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo introduced new coordinators Alex Van Pelt, DeMarcus Covington, and Jeremy Springer. Mayo fielded questions about the potential return of former wide receivers coach Troy Brown to the staff.
Confirming Brown’s continued presence, Mayo noted that the coaching setup is still evolving. Brown’s recent seasons have been challenging, with criticism mounting as the Patriots’ receiving corps struggled under his guidance.
The Patriots have appointed Tyler Hughes and Tiquan Underwood to take over Brown’s previous responsibilities with the wide receivers this year. It’s anticipated that Brown will likely continue coaching returners, although his exact role is pending an official announcement and title assignment by the team.
Notably, Brown represented the Patriots at the Senior Bowl in February, albeit with minimal involvement in the team’s content and opting not to wear Patriots gear. He served as the offensive coordinator for the American Team, interacting with prospects who may interest Mayo and personnel executive Eliot Wolf.
Whether Brown’s interactions with these prospects will influence the Patriots’ strategy remains to be seen, but his tenure with the team will persist.
