Breaking: Packers intriguing decisions to make on offensive line

Here’s what we know about the Green Bay Packers’ offensive line: Elgton Jenkins will be at left guard, and Zach Tom will have a spot somewhere.

Here’s what we think we know: Josh Myers will be the center, despite some fan opinions, and first-round pick Jordan Morgan will also have a role.

One certainty is that the offensive line is the most intriguing position on the team.

While it’s easy to say the Packers will start their best five linemen, identifying those five and their positions is more challenging.

Take Zach Tom as an example. There are rumors that someone in the organization sees the 2022 fourth-round pick as a potential Hall of Fame center. That’s promising, but he has also proven to be a solid right tackle, a position that’s hard to fill.

Then there’s Rasheed Walker, a 2022 seventh-round pick who performed well as a left tackle last season, particularly towards the end and in the postseason. This is also Jordan Morgan’s position unless he shifts to guard, which many college scouts believed suited him better.

If I had to predict now, I’d say the starting lineup on opening day might be Walker, Jenkins, Myers, Morgan, and Tom from left to right. However, I wouldn’t be shocked if it was Morgan, Jenkins, Myers, Sean Rhyan, and Tom. Nor would I be too surprised if it was Walker, Jenkins, Myers, Rhyan, and Tom with the first-round rookie starting on the bench. Another interesting combination could be Morgan, Jenkins, Tom, Myers, and Walker if Tom moves inside.

Training camp and the three preseason games will largely determine which lineup will face the Philadelphia Eagles on September 6. These sessions will also decide the backup spots, which could be just as intriguing as the starters.

Philadelphia Eagles' Andre Dillard likely to be backup left tackle or traded

At backup tackle, there’s Andre Dillard, who is hoping for success with the Packers after underperforming with the Eagles and the Titans. Coaches Adam Stenavich and Luke Butkus might be able to bring out his potential. There’s also Caleb Jones, Luke Tenuta, and sixth-round rookie Travis Glover. Not all four will make the team; likely only two will if Walker starts. If Walker is the No. 3 tackle, maybe only one of the four will make the cut.

Inside, if Rhyan isn’t starting, he’ll likely be the top backup. Royce Newman, despite his starting experience as a rookie, might lose his backup spot due to his $3.2 million salary. Rookies Jacob Monk, a fifth-round pick, and free agent Donovan Jennings are also in the mix for spots.

Confused yet? Well, at least Elgton Jenkins will be starting at left guard. Probably.
