Building team chemistry is crucial when considering player additions ahead of the NHL trade deadline, especially for top teams aiming for a strong push in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After seven games this postseason, it seems the Rangers have made successful moves before the deadline.
In 2023, the Rangers pursued big names like Vladamir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane, but ultimately flamed out in the first round of the playoffs, losing in seven games to the New Jersey Devils. This year, they reverted to their 2022 trade deadline strategy, focusing on finding the best fits rather than the biggest names.
The Rangers acquired third-line center Alex Wennberg from the Seattle Kraken and forward Jack Roslovic from the Columbus Blue Jackets ahead of this year’s deadline.
Chris Drury’s approach this time around mirrored that of 2022, when the Rangers acquired Andrew Copp, Frank Vatrano, Tyler Motte, and Justin Braun. While not the flashiest names available, each player played a significant role in New York’s run to the 2022 Eastern Conference Final.
Now, the Rangers are just one win away from reaching the conference final again, having started the postseason with a 7-0 record. Both Roslovic and Wennberg have seamlessly integrated into their roles and have been key contributors to New York’s postseason success so far.
Roslovic, who initially struggled on the first line with Mika Zibenajad and Chris Kreider, has found his rhythm in the playoffs. He has contributed three even-strength assists and two power-play goals, including a memorable snipe in Game 2 of the first-round sweep against the Washington Capitals.
Wennberg has been a stabilizing force on the third line, alongside Will Cuylle and Kaapo Kakko. Despite only recording one assist in the playoffs, Wennberg’s two-way play has been invaluable, as his line has yet to be on the ice for a goal against. Additionally, Wennberg has been a key penalty killer, contributing to the team’s perfect penalty kill in the second round.
Rangers coach Peter Laviolette praised Wennberg’s contribution, highlighting his skating ability, puck skills, vision, and overall smart play. With Filip Chytil replacing Cuylle on the third line, the Rangers look to continue their success with a balanced offensive and defensive approach in the playoffs.
