The Carolina Panthers have officially sought permission to interview Detroit Lions Chief Operating Officer Mike Disner for their vacant general manager position. Disner is among nine candidates the Panthers have expressed interest in interviewing following the conclusion of their season.
While assistant coaches on playoff-bound teams must wait until after the Wild Card round for interviews, general manager candidates like Disner are eligible for interviews at any time, provided formal requests are made.
Disner’s NFL journey began with the New England Patriots in 2007 as a scouting assistant. After two years, he transitioned to a role on the NFL management council. In 2014, he joined the Arizona Cardinals as their Director of Football Administration, where he served for six years before joining the Lions.
A native of West Bloomfield, Michigan, Disner returned home in 2019, assuming the role of Vice President of Football Administration with the Lions. His primary responsibilities centered around salary cap management, earning praise for his innovative approach and problem-solving skills.
In 2021, Disner was promoted to Senior Vice President of Football and Business Administration, playing a crucial role in the Lions’ search for a new coach and general manager. He is credited with identifying and advocating for the consideration of Lions general manager Brad Holmes for his current role.
In 2022, Disner ascended to the position of Chief Operating Officer, a testament to his contributions to the organization. Throughout his tenure in Detroit, Disner has received accolades for his impactful roles, with Lions legend Calvin Johnson acknowledging his role in repairing strained relationships.
Coach Dan Campbell commended Disner for his multifaceted contributions, highlighting his involvement in cap management, contract structuring, and overseeing administrative aspects. Campbell expressed support for Disner’s potential and praised him as a deserving candidate.
While Disner remains a pivotal figure in the Lions organization, the front office has implemented succession plans. With Disner’s rising prominence, the Lions hired Brandon Sosna as their senior director of football administration, working alongside Disner in various capacities, including contracts and cap management. The Lions are closely monitoring the situation, acknowledging the growing interest in their coaches and administrators for interviews.
