Newcastle has been monitoring Andreas Christensen for a considerable period as they seek to bolster their defensive options by securing a new central defender to enhance depth in the backline.
Despite previous efforts, a transfer has not materialized for the ex-Chelsea player. Now, as per a report from Sport, Manchester United is intensifying their interest in the ‘extraordinary’ Christensen with plans to make a move in January.
Newcastle want a top defender to replace Fabian Schar
This observation is not a criticism of Schar’s current performance, as he is currently excelling on the field. One could even argue that he has been more vital to Newcastle than Sven Botman this season. However, given that the Swiss international recently turned 32, the club must always be forward-thinking and consider securing their future. Hence, there is a definite need for those in top positions at the club to contemplate a replacement.
Christensen was initially identified as a potential candidate to succeed the right-sided centre-back at the beginning of 2023, though the club did not submit a concrete offer. Manchester United may now seek to disrupt Newcastle’s plans by pursuing the former Premier League winner, who remains a significant part of Barcelona’s team but could soon face competition from a younger defender.
