Let the competition for coaching services commence.
According to a report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Commanders and Raiders, along with other teams, have shown interest in hiring Patriots head coach Bill Belichick for possible vacancies after the current season.
Next week, Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Belichick are scheduled to meet to deliberate on his future with the team, which he guided to six Super Bowl victories. Throughout this season, there have been numerous speculations about a potential separation between Kraft and Belichick.
New England, with a record of 4-12, is currently experiencing its worst season since 1992, marking a career-low for Coach Bill Belichick. Despite this, the Patriots’ formidable defensive performance suggests that Belichick still possesses valuable coaching expertise that could benefit an NFL team, whether in New England or elsewhere.
There’s a connection between Belichick and the Raiders, as former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is pursuing a minority ownership stake with the team. However, the interim head coach, Antonio Pierce, enjoys strong support from the Vegas locker room, which may complicate a potential move by Belichick.
On the other hand, the Commanders seem to be a more intriguing possibility. Head coach Ron Rivera is anticipated to be let go after the season, and potential changes in the front office, under owner Josh Harris, could create an environment suitable for Belichick. Given Belichick’s dual role as New England’s head coach and de facto general manager, a similar structure might find a place in Washington.
Dianna Russini’s report suggests that more teams might express interest if Belichick’s tenure with the Patriots concludes after Week 18. The Patriots, in need of a rebuild, are likely to have a top pick in the 2024 draft, potentially enhancing their selection through a trade involving Belichick. Despite his contract extension in the 2023 offseason, a shift in direction for the Patriots could make Belichick a sought-after asset.
If the New England era under Belichick comes to an end, the demand for his coaching services is expected to be high. Any NFL team with coaching vacancies this offseason should be prepared to submit their offers.
