The Miami Dolphins have enlisted undrafted prospect Gavin Hardison from UTEP as their new quarterback for 2024. NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero revealed the signing just after the NFL draft ended on April 27, providing insights into Hardison’s scouting report.
Described as a four-year starter, Hardison’s final college season was cut short due to Tommy John surgery on his throwing elbow in November. Despite concerns about accuracy and his injury, an AFC coordinator noted his toughness and unique arm talent.
Ranked 19th among 2024 QB prospects, Hardison was expected to be a seventh-round pick or a priority UDFA, ultimately signing as the latter.
Pelissero highlighted Hardison’s standout arm strength, which produces impressive throws, according to a Pro Football Network scouting profile. Analyst Ian Valentino praised Hardison’s experience and his ability to elevate the UTEP program with his strong arm and gunslinger mentality.
Valentino compared Hardison to former Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, noting his low completion rate but intriguing potential. Despite a completion rate of 53.3% in college, Hardison started 35 games over five seasons at UTEP, throwing for nearly 8,000 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 33 interceptions.
The Dolphins, sticking to their word, did not pursue a quarterback early in the draft. General manager Chris Grier had stated they hadn’t considered the position in the first round. The next focus is negotiating an extension with Tua Tagovailoa, though caution has been advised against overpaying him.
Tagovailoa remains the Dolphins’ long-term QB focus for now, but if negotiations don’t go well, they might look to pursue Dak Prescott in 2025.
