In the aftermath of the 2023 season’s conclusion and the subsequent departure of Arthur Smith, Falcons players tidied up their lockers on Monday. Smith, who served as the head coach for three seasons, expressed his gratitude and affection for the team in a morning meeting held after the news broke the previous night regarding his departure.
Falcons tight end Jonnu Smith shared, “He conveyed his appreciation and love for all of us during the team meeting. What resonated with me the most was his assurance, having been with him for the majority of my NFL career, that his number will always be unchanged whenever we need him. That’s the person he is, from the first day I met him.”
While some players were caught off guard by the late-night news, veteran Calais Campbell admitted he wasn’t surprised, though he hoped for a different outcome. Despite finishing his 16th year in the NFL, Campbell acknowledged the realities of the business. Although uncertain about a potential 17th season, he affirmed his physical readiness to continue playing.
Cornerback Jeff Okudah, facing uncertainty due to an expiring contract, echoed Campbell’s understanding of accountability among players when goals aren’t met. As lockers were cleared out, Falcons players entered the offseason, with offensive lineman Kaleb McGary humorously retreating to a “hobbit hole” in the woods.
The future remains uncertain as the Falcons await the next steps. Jonnu Smith emphasized the need for professionalism and adaptability, whether changes occur now or months later with the appointment of a new head coach.
Despite the upheaval, there’s a collective commitment among players to build something substantial. Reflecting on the defensive improvements in the past season, particularly with the return of defensive lineman Grady Jarrett, the Falcons aim to sustain their development.
Jarrett, recovering from a torn ACL surgery in October, expressed satisfaction with his progress. As the regular season concludes, his focus shifts to offseason training and the anticipation of what lies ahead. Despite the uncertainty of Arthur Smith’s successor, players like Jarrett, familiar with the team’s highs and lows, maintain a steadfast mentality.
“We aspire to win and be in the postseason, playing for championships. I’m excited about what’s to come,” affirmed Jarrett, encapsulating the collective determination within the Falcons.
