Although the New York Yankees have made several strong moves this offseason, a few roster questions still remain and will likely need to be addressed before spring training begins.
In particular, the Yankees are expected to target a left-handed reliever for their bullpen and decide how to handle the infield, depending on which position between second and third base Jazz Chisholm Jr. ultimately fills.
While the team has been connected to multiple free-agent infielders, the most notable name in terms of star power is former Houston Astros slugger Alex Bregman.
However, despite their reported links to Bregman earlier in the offseason, the current consensus seems to be that the Yankees are not particularly eager to pursue him.
“I’m not seeing the Mets or Yankees as potential landing spots for Bregman right now,” Heyman stated. “He’s obviously a fantastic player who would benefit any team, but I don’t think the Yankees are planning any more major moves.
“They’ve already done quite a bit and look like one of the winners of the offseason so far,” Heyman added. “So, I don’t see Bregman heading to New York.”
Heyman also mentioned that the Yankees’ biggest rivals, the Boston Red Sox, appear “as likely as anyone right now to land Bregman.”
While Yankees fans would undoubtedly prefer to see Bregman stay out of the AL East, the significant improvements New York has already made this offseason should leave them confident in their chances against the Red Sox next season—Bregman or no Bregman.
