The Atlanta Falcons have made changes to their quarterback lineup, parting ways with two members from last year’s squad. Desmond Ridder was traded to the Arizona Cardinals for Rondale Moore, while Taylor Heinicke’s contract was reworked to keep him on the roster. Logan Woodside, who was a free agent, has found a new team with the Bengals.
Cincinnati also signed Jake Browning, providing them with both a backup quarterback and an emergency option in one move. This aligns with their strategy of not bringing in a significant threat behind Joe Burrow.
For Atlanta, letting go of Woodside was expected. Although he had a connection with Arthur Smith from their time with the Titans, he served mainly as an emergency quarterback behind Ridder and Heinicke. Despite performing well in this role, the Falcons are aiming to draft a quarterback to develop as a potential future starter behind Kirk Cousins and Heinicke. Therefore, there wasn’t a clear fit for Woodside to return to Atlanta.
With the Bengals, Woodside is likely to be in the emergency role once more, backing up Browning and Burrow. This position may see action given Burrow’s injury history and the team’s high expectations. Woodside, originally drafted by the Bengals in 2018, has had stints with the Titans and the Falcons. Now returning to his original team, he aims to secure the third quarterback spot in what has been a solid but limited career.
