Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Deon Cain is set to return to Pittsburgh on Thursday, but this time he will be with the Buffalo Bills, not the Steelers. Cain recently signed with the Bills, who have been active in reshuffling their roster, including placing Chase Claypool on injured reserve.
Cain has been playing with the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL over the past few years while attempting to make a comeback to the NFL. On Thursday, the Bills will participate in a joint practice with the Steelers at Acrisure Stadium ahead of their preseason game on Saturday.
Cain was briefly with the Steelers in 2019, joining the active roster due to several injuries among the wide receivers. He has also had stints with the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles. Over the past few seasons, including when the UFL was known as the USFL, Cain has been one of the league’s more reliable wide receivers.
The Steelers are looking forward to their practice session with the Bills, with Mike Tomlin describing the Bills as the ‘ideal dance partner.’
“I’m expecting good work,” Tomlin said. “I spoke with Sean McDermott last night. He and I have a long history, and he’s a great partner in this regard. I know his principles and am eager for a productive and clean preparation for the season.”
Cain will have an opportunity to demonstrate his skills during this practice, hoping to secure a spot on an NFL practice squad after numerous training camp invitations over the years.
