It was a busy day for the Ottawa Senators.
First, they announced the signing of goalie Mads Sogaard to a two-year contract.
Then, they revealed the acquisition of forwards Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiasson from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Roby Jarventie and a fourth-round draft pick in 2025.
Bourgault, a former first-round draft pick (21st overall in 2021), recently finished his second professional season with the Oilers’ organization, recording 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in 55 regular-season games with the Bakersfield Condors.
Chiasson, in his first professional season with the Oilers’ organization in 2023-24, played all but one of his 69 regular-season games with Edmonton’s ECHL affiliate, the Fort Wayne Komets, tallying 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists).
Later in the afternoon, the Senators acquired a 2026 sixth-round draft pick from Colorado in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick and goaltender Kevin Mandolese.
Sogaard’s contract for the first year will pay him $775,000 if he’s in the NHL or $225,000 if he’s in the AHL. The second year is a one-way deal worth $775,000.
The 6-foot-7 Sogaard spent most of last season with the Belleville Senators, earning 18 wins in 32 games, with two shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.45, and a save percentage of .916.
He also played in six NHL games with Ottawa, securing his 10th NHL victory by stopping 22 of 25 shots in a 5-3 win at Philadelphia on Jan. 21.
“Mads’ development continues to progress,” said Senators general manager Steve Staios. “With considerable playoff experience this past spring in Belleville, alongside a strong regular season, he gained additional confidence as a professional goaltender. The upcoming season will be an important stepping stone for him.”
Sogaard, the Senators’ second second-round pick (37th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft, enters the 2024-25 season as the B-Sens’ all-time leader in games (96) and wins (50).
