The Miami Hurricanes have embraced a “next man up” mentality on the defensive line throughout the season, but they’ve been hit with more injury setbacks. When asked about Akheem Mesidor’s injury status, who has been out for several games, Coach Cristobal also provided an update on sophomore pass rusher Nyjalik Kelly.
“I can tell you Nyjalik will be out for the rest of the season,” Cristobal stated, adding that Kelly’s injury is more severe than Mesidor’s.
Regarding Mesidor, Cristobal mentioned, “Akheem is close,” and noted that further evaluations were scheduled for later that day and again later in the week.
Defensive linemen Rueben Bain, Leonard Taylor, Jared Harrison-Hunte, and Jahfari Harvey have stepped up in the absence of Mesidor, Kelly, and Branson Deen.
Cristobal also addressed the status of starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, confirming on Monday afternoon that “he’s good to go,” as well as running back Henry Parrish, who also missed the Clemson game.
On running back Trevonte’ Citizen, Cristobal shared that Citizen is nearing a return, practicing with the team and participating in drills, with contact work expected this week. He emphasized that the focus now is on Citizen’s mental confidence after his significant knee injury and subsequent setback during recovery.
Citizen has been sidelined for the first season and a half of his Miami career due to a knee injury sustained in fall camp 2022.
Cristobal also mentioned that running back Don Chaney Jr. is recovering well after leaving the Clemson game with a minor injury in the fourth quarter.
The Miami Hurricanes are set to host the Virginia Cavaliers this Saturday, October 28th, at 3:30 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium. Virginia enters the game following an upset win over North Carolina.
