The competition for Michigan’s starting quarterback has been a hot topic among fans since the spring. During fall camp, Alex Orji and Davis Warren began to pull ahead. Recently, the Big Ten Network referred to the contest as a “two-horse race.”
Pete Thamel reported last week that Alex Orji was expected to be the starting quarterback, with the assumption that both players would see action. However, it now seems likely that Davis Warren will be the first quarterback on the field against Fresno State, although both quarterbacks are expected to play. Offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell mentioned that Orji will still have a role in the offense, even if he doesn’t start.
While Orji was once favored to start, Chris Balas of The Wolverine reported that Warren had a stronger week of practice. Unverified social media posts have also suggested that Warren may be the starting quarterback.
